Melukat is the sacred local practice of water purification. It is a traditional Balinese Hindu water purification ritual, and the name is derived from the old Javanese word 'lukat', meaning to purify. The practise involves bathing in holy water sources like fountains or beaches in order to cleanse the mind, body and soul of negative influences, bad spirits and inner impurities.
The ceremony is usually guided by a local priest, who performs mantras and leads prayers and offerings which are directed towards Hindu deities, nature spirits and elemental forces. Melukat is deeply rooted in Balinese Hinduism, and there are different types of Melukat that are performed for specific needs, like for healing sickness, preparing for marriage or removing negative energy.
The Philosophy of Sekala And Niskala (The Seen And Unseen World)
The guiding principle in all Balinese Hindu culture is to maintain balance and harmony between the gods, humanity and nature. The Balinese philosophy of Sekala and Niskala is no different, and emphasises balance between the physical, tangible world, and the unseen forces such as deities and energies.
Sekala: Represents the physical world — daily actions, human interactions, nature and tangible ceremonies.
Niskala: Represents the invisible realm — ancestral spirits, gods, energy and the divine, that is believed to influence daily life.
In Balinese philosophy, one cannot exist without the other, so light and dark, good and evil, and seen and unseen are balanced in order to create harmony around us. The belief that the physical world is constantly influenced by the spiritual world means the Balinese people honour both on a daily basis. This ancient wisdom is at the heart of our spiritual retreats in Bali, which are thoughtfully designed to help guests honour both worlds through ceremony, reflection and guided immersion in Balinese culture.
What to Expect at a Sacred Water Temple (e.g. Tirta Empul)
Tirta Empul is a 10th-century Hindu Balinese water temple and is renowned as one of the island's holiest sites. Built around a natural, sacred spring, it is an active place of worship, and the large bathing structure has 30 water fountains across the 3 pools, and is used for spiritual cleansing and Melukat ceremonies.
The traditional Balinese architecture, crystal clear waters and lush surroundings give a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere, and it is mandatory for everyone attending to be dressed in traditional temple attire (sarongs can be rented), so even as a visitor, you will feel very connected.
Water temples are not tourist spots; they are working temples and must be respected at all times. Be aware of the rules (certain fountains are reserved for priests only, or the deceased) and don't take photos directly of people who are praying, and you will be rewarded with a deeply spiritual experience. A Melukat ceremony at Tirta Empul is included as part of the Soulful Bali retreat package at Soulshine Bali, offering guests a fully guided and deeply meaningful purification experience.
The Steps of the Ritual: A Guide to Your Spiritual Cleanse
The ritual begins with preparations and offerings. All participants are required to dress in traditional attire (sarong and sash) and prepare, or purchase 'Canang Sari' offerings (a small, hand-woven palm leaf tray filled with flowers, coconut shavings, snacks and incense) to show gratitude and set intentions.
A guide or temple priest then leads prayers to invoke blessings and ask for permission to perform the purification. Participants then enter the holy water, moving through a series of spouts where they wash their faces three times and submerge their heads. Sometimes drinking the water is also permitted to cleanse from within.
Once the water ritual is over, a final prayer is offered, and perhaps a final blessing where the priest may place rice grains on your forehead for protection, or a Tridatu Bracelet on your wrist, which acts as a spiritual amulet for protection, balance and harmony.
After washing away negative influences, you will feel a profound sense of lightness and inner peace.
