Many who travel are content to visit the typical tourist spots and commercialised experiences. However, if you are looking for a more authentic, immersive experience while abroad in another country, travelling off the beaten path is essential. In addition to avoiding the crowds, exploring the more unknown areas of your holiday destination can lead to unique discoveries and unexpected adventures.

The beautiful Indonesian island of Bali is hiding so many gems away from the tourist trail. This vacation, why not experience the tranquil landscapes, authentic culture and meaningful interactions with locals that visiting the more unknown areas of Bali can bring? Soulshine Bali, nestled in the heart of Ubud, makes the perfect base from which to explore both the iconic and the hidden corners of this extraordinary island.

Sidemen Valley: The Tranquil Alternative to the Tegalalang Rice Terraces

Every year, many thousands of tourists head to the Tegalalang Rice Terraces. This UNESCO World Heritage site showcases traditional Balinese farming practices. While this area has iconic scenery, it is a very tourist-focused area.

If you are looking for a scenic, authentic alternative, you can't go wrong with Sideman Valley. This stunning area of natural beauty features dramatic and expansive rice terraces and traditional village life. This quiet, scenic location boasts jaw-dropping views of Mount Agung.

Located one and a half to two hours from Ubud, take a day trip to this destination to experience untouched, slow-paced Balinese rural daily life. Take a trip to Sideman Valley to walk through the rice fields, explore local villages or visit traditional weaving workshops.

Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave): Exploring Ancient, Mysterious Architecture

Want a unique cultural destination that is neglected by most tourists? Goa Gajah, also known as "Elephant Cave", is an 11th-century Hindu-Buddhist temple complex near Ubud. It was historically used for meditation and spiritual retreats. It features a central cave, ancient bathing pools and verdant forest surroundings.

The cave entrance is carved like a sinister demon's mouth, designed to ward off evil spirits. Inside, the T-shaped cave features a statue of Ganesha, the Hindu deity, and the bathing pool is surrounded by six female guardian statues holding fountains.

Located 15 minutes from central Ubud, the site is perfect for an hour visit to enjoy the ancient architecture and lush surroundings. A sarong and sash are required for entry, which are usually provided at the entrance. Cultural excursions like this are woven into our Bali holiday packages, allowing guests to explore the island's spiritual heritage in a meaningful and guided way.

Chasing Waterfalls: Finding the Uncrowded, Serene Swimming Holes

Rather than visit the highly popular Tegenungan or Kanto Lampo, why not visit one of Ubud's lesser-known swimming holes? Some great alternatives include:

  • Tibumana Waterfall: A local favourite located just 30 minutes from Ubud, this waterfall is just a short walk through the forest.

  • Pengibul Waterfall: This hidden gem is located near Tibumana. It features a series of small cascades through the forest, creating multiple swimming holes. This area is quiet and peaceful.

  • Manuba Waterfall: In Tegalalang, this is an awe-inspiring waterfall that cascades into a tree-lined pool. Still relatively unknown, it is great for those looking for the untouched jungle vibe.

  • Sumampan Waterfall: This spot is a secret even to locals. This waterfall is surrounded by stone statues and trees. It is located 20 minutes south of Ubud.

Local Market Exploration: Finding Authentic Balinese Crafts and Produce

If you are looking for authentic wares and a great way to experience Balinese culture, checking out the local markets is a must. Ubud markets are lively, colourful and full of creativity and character. They're ideal for finding handmade crafts, art and souvenirs. Some great locations include:

  • Ubud Art Market (Pasar Seni Ubud): This is one of Ubud's most popular markets. Artisans proudly display their arts, crafts and souvenirs. You can find everything from handwoven baskets and intricate wood carvings to sarongs and rattan bags.

  • Sukawati Art Market: Just a short drive from Ubud, Sukawati offers authentic handicrafts at bargain prices. Great for apparel, jewellery and locally made items.

  • Tegallalang Handicraft Village: Perfect for those seeking locally made home decor, wooden carvings and furniture.
